Packing Materials 101: What You Really Need (And What You Don’t)

Packing materials can make or break your move — but let’s be real: it’s easy to overspend on supplies you don’t actually need. At Spartan Movers, we want to help you move smarter, not more expensively. Whether you’re packing yourself or using our professional service, here’s a no-fluff guide to what’s actually worth buying.
✅ What You Really Need
1. Sturdy Moving Boxes
You don’t need fancy designer boxes — just strong, corrugated ones in small, medium, and large sizes.
✔ Small: Great for books, tools, and heavy items
✔ Medium: Your everyday go-to
✔ Large: Best for light items like bedding or pillows
👉 Pro tip: Don’t overpack large boxes with heavy items — they’ll break or hurt your back.
2. Packing Tape (Heavy Duty Only)
Thin, cheap tape isn’t worth it. It peels, splits, and won’t hold boxes together. Go for 2.5” industrial-grade tape, and grab a tape gun to save time.
3. Bubble Wrap or Packing Paper
If you’re moving dishes, glassware, or décor, you’ll need protection. Bubble wrap works great for delicate items. Packing paper is better for wrapping mugs, bowls, and other kitchenware without taking up extra space.
4. Plastic Stretch Wrap
This is gold. We use it to wrap dressers, TVs, furniture legs, and to keep drawers from sliding open. It also protects against scratches and keeps items clean during the move.
5. Moving Blankets or Pads
If you're moving any large furniture, these are a must. They prevent dents, dings, and damage in the truck. Spartan Movers uses these on every job — and so should you if you’re moving yourself.
6. Labels & Permanent Markers
A labeled box saves you hours of digging later. Write the room, a few contents, and “FRAGILE” if necessary. Don’t rely on memory — label everything.
❌ What You Can Probably Skip
1. Box Kits from Big Box Stores
They’re convenient, but overpriced. Many people buy them thinking they’re getting everything they need — but end up short on materials or stuck with items they didn’t use.
2. Cheap Foam Peanuts
They create a mess, don’t stay in place, and aren't eco-friendly. Stick with paper or bubble wrap — easier to handle and clean up.
3. Pre-labeled Room Stickers
They sound helpful, but a marker and some tape work just as well — without the extra cost.
4. Overpacking with Bubble Wrap
More isn’t always better. You don’t need three feet of bubble wrap per mug. Wrap carefully and use towels or soft clothing for extra cushion.
